1. "You're someone who never guards his tongue"—this was Baochai's assessment of Xue Pan. "Not guarding one's tongue" means being guileless and speaking too freely.
2. Xue Pan said: "Dear sister, there's no use quarreling with me. I've long known what's in your heart. Mother told me before that your 'gold locket' must be matched with someone who has jade. You've been watching, and since you've seen Baoyu has that wretched piece of jade, naturally you now take his side in everything."
3. Such words might mean little to a girl today, but in ancient times, suggesting that an unmarried girl secretly loved someone was considered a profound humiliation.
4. In truth, what Xue Pan said was accurate—there had been many earlier signs that Baochai truly wished to marry Baoyu. But for a girl's secret feelings to be so bluntly revealed, she must have been deeply hurt. Thus, Baochai was grievously wounded here.
5. I believe the author also used the character of Xue Pan—this thoughtless man—to voice the truth. Baochai, a person of considerable calculation, ironically had a brother completely devoid of guile.
