一、莫泊桑的《羊脂球》经典摘录：无论是地震能使坍塌的房子去覆灭整个的民族，无论是江河决口能使落水的农人同着牛的尸体和冲散的栋梁一块儿漂流，无论是打了胜仗的军队屠杀并且俘虏那些自卫的人，又用刀神的名义实行抢劫并且用炮声向神灵表示谢意，同样是使人恐怖的天灾，同样破坏任何对于永恒公理的信仰，破坏我们那种通过教育对于上苍的保护和人类的理智而起的信任心。
1. Classic excerpt from Maupassant's "Ball of Fat": Whether it be an earthquake that topples houses to obliterate entire populations, a river bursting its banks that sends drowning farmers drifting alongside cattle carcasses and scattered beams, or a victorious army slaughtering and capturing those who defend themselves—then plundering in the name of the god of swords and thanking the deities with cannon fire—all are equally terrifying calamities. They equally shatter any belief in eternal justice and undermine the trust we have cultivated through education in divine protection and human reason.

He admonished Maupassant: "Whatever you want to express, there is only one sentence that truly captures it, only one verb and one adjective that are truly fitting—that is, the most precise sentence, verb, and adjective... and you must find that one sentence, that one verb, that one adjective."
