1. If I were Baoyu, hearing my mother say such words would be truly horrifying. What she meant was: if your elder brother were still alive, I wouldn't care if a hundred Baoyus were beaten to death.
2. Have you noticed how it all circles back to Confucian ethics? For this woman, the most important thing is that she must have a son.
3. Reading such words sends chills down one's spine. It seems she isn't truly loving Baoyu, but rather worrying about her own status and position, concerned about whether she has a son to rely on.
4. In Cao Xueqin's view, love shouldn't be confined solely within ethical frameworks. Loving someone shouldn't be just because he's my son. The most fundamental love should be from one life to another. More explicitly, Cao Xueqin opposed Confucian ethical love because such love makes distinctions.
5. Sometimes when you attend a funeral, you see a crowd of people crying, yet each person is crying for themselves. It's just an opportunity for everyone to take the chance to pour out their own grievances, and their weeping becomes plaintive and narrative, almost like singing.
