Wang Xijue was one of the very few who dared to say no to Zhang Juzheng and strongly opposed the act of not returning home to observe mourning. When Zhang Juzheng was criticized after his death, Wang could fairly acknowledge Zhang's achievements. Compared to Shen Shixing, who displayed great steadiness and wisdom in minor details, Wang Xijue always remained clear-headed and maintained his uniqueness in major matters, but his flaw was that he would not let go when he had the upper hand.

If Zhang Juzheng's tenth year of Wanli (1582) created the Wanli New Deal, revitalizing the administrative efficiency of the Wanli reign, then Shen Shixing's nine-year career in the Wenyuan Pavilion pulled the Ming Dynasty back from the issues left by Zhang Juzheng and set the Ming Dynasty back on its intended track.

As for Wang Xijue's over twenty-year career as a grand secretary, it eased the conflicts of the "Dispute over the National Foundation" and prevented the Ming Dynasty from completely sinking into it without being able to extricate itself.

On the issue of appointing a crown prince, Wang Xijue was much smarter than Shen Shixing. At any time, performing a duet with the emperor would only lead to one's own disadvantage.

Wang Xijue thought that by throwing the problem back to Wanli, he could avoid risks, but the officials ultimately directed all their anger at him. When Wang Xijue, disheartened, wanted to resign, Wanli reluctantly withdrew the edict of establishing three kings simultaneously and agreed three years later to appoint the eldest son as crown prince.
