1. Wars must be fought with hometown troops. When Emperor Gaozu of Han, Liu Bang, seized the empire, his core team consisted of his fellow townsmen from Pei County, including Xiao He, Fan Kuai, Zhou Bo, Wang Ling, and others.
2. The generals of Emperor Guangwu of the Eastern Han, Liu Xiu, were mostly from his hometown of Nanyang. When Zhu Yuanzhang fought to establish his rule, he also relied on his Haozhou troops. Among the initial twenty-four generals were Xu Da, Tang He, Lu Zhongheng, Hua Yun, Zhou Dexing, Geng Bingwen, and others.
3. Superstition was a common ailment among people in the feudal era. To dominate the land, one had to occupy a place with royal aura. Nanjing was such a place: the Purple Mountain runs north-south like a lurking giant dragon, while the Stone Mountain stands steep by the river, crouched like a tiger. This is the origin of Nanjing's description as "a coiling dragon and a crouching tiger."
4. Yu Tonghai is recorded in the "History of Ming" as a naval commander, but in reality, he was a robber who plundered along the river. However, to Zhu Yuanzhang, he was an important figure. Killing some people and seizing some money didn't matter—what mattered was that he was useful.
5. In August and September of 1355, Zhu Yuanzhang attacked Jiqing twice in a row, but both times he was defeated by the Yuan army. However, failure wasn't necessarily a bad thing for Zhu Yuanzhang, because in these two battles, Guo Tianxu and Zhang Tianyou both died in combat, allowing Zhu Yuanzhang to logically assume the position of chief marshal.
