一、苏格兰人柯南道尔于1881年取得医师资格，1885年获医学博士学位。他行医10余年，收入仅能维持生活。因急于增加收入，改行写小说。
1. The Scotsman Conan Doyle obtained his medical qualification in 1881 and received his medical doctorate in 1885. He practiced medicine for over ten years, but his income was barely enough to make ends meet. Eager to increase his earnings, he switched professions to write novels.
二、1886年4月，行医5年的柯南道尔写成福尔摩斯的第一个侦探故事《血字的研究》，几经退稿才发表。1890年《四签名》发表，从此闻名于世。
2. In April 1886, after five years of medical practice, Conan Doyle wrote Holmes' first detective story, "A Study in Scarlet". It was rejected several times before finally being published. "The Sign of the Four" was published in 1890, establishing his worldwide fame.
三、1894年柯南道尔决定停止写侦探小说，在《最后一案》中让福尔摩斯在激流中死去。不料广大读者对此愤慨，提出抗议。
3. In 1894, Conan Doyle decided to stop writing detective stories and killed off Holmes in the raging currents in "The Final Problem". Unexpectedly, readers were outraged and protested vehemently.
四、柯南道尔只得在《空屋》中让福尔摩斯死里逃生，又写出《巴斯克维尔的猎犬》、《归来记》、《恐怖谷》等侦探小说。1902年，因为英国南非政策辩护而受封爵位。

Conan Doyle had no choice but to bring Holmes back from the dead in "The Adventure of the Empty House", and went on to write more detective stories including "The Hound of the Baskervilles", "The Return of Sherlock Holmes", and "The Valley of Fear". In 1902, he was knighted for his defense of British policy in South Africa.
